Evaporator Coil vs. Condenser Coil: Two Different Jobs, Two Different Price Tags

Most homeowners hear "coil replacement" and assume it's one thing. It isn't. The evaporator coil sits inside your air handler or furnace — it absorbs heat from indoor air and is where the refrigerant does its primary cooling work. The condenser coil sits in the outdoor unit and releases that heat outside. Both can fail, but they fail differently and cost differently to replace.

Evaporator Coil Replacement

The evaporator coil is the more commonly replaced of the two. Coils crack, develop refrigerant leaks, or corrode — particularly in homes with formicary corrosion (a chemical reaction between copper tubing and certain household compounds). Condenser Coil Replacement

Condenser coil replacement is less common but tends to cost more in parts. The outdoor coil is exposed to weather and corrosive coastal air year-round; physical damage and refrigerant leaks are the typical failure modes.
